Woody Wood Baker's delectable cookies have been a regular feature at Delivery Momma's PO. Their delicious confections are tasty and flavorful, made from real and fresh ingredients with no MSG or artificial flavorings.
The brains behind the brand is Sri Mawanti, a 32 year old full-time Chef hailing from Indonesia. Sri’s career started out in design and marketing, with more than 8 years of experience in Malaysia and Indonesia before coming to Australia, enrolling herself in a cooking course and experiencing various fields of hospitality – from event catering to fine dining in Sydney.
Woody Wood Baker itself is Sri’s second line of business, the first being Woody Wood Paper, her own invitation design and packaging studio. From there, she and her partner expanded into baking, serving up exquisite treats and snacks through Woody Wood Baker’s variety of products. The wood element in the naming of the brand also reflects their symbol of using natural products, and environmentally friendly glass jar packaging that can be re-used and re-purposed by the customers.
Woody Wood Baker prides itself as a brand that serves up cookies made using high quality real ingredients. “One of my dearest aunts, who took care of me when I was a kid, passed away because of cancer in 2012,” shared Sri. “From then on, I decided to eat well. MSG, Coca Cola, Instant and Canned Food, Powdered Stock and Artificial Colorings – they are all a BIG NO on my meals.” Sri wanted to impart this conviction into her baked goods, where it is free of artificial coloring and flavorings, simply natural homemade cookies that are very delicious and safe to consume.
This causes a lengthy process in creating the cookies, since each of them contains unique flavors that needs to be created from scratch. The cappuccino cookies for example, features freshly brewed ground coffee, not instant coffee or coffee essence. The rich hazelnut flavor that is evident in their Chocolate Hazelnut cookies were made from whole roasted hazelnut, which is then blended finely into a flour texture. Their Kaastengels are made from three different cheese instead of using chicken stockas flavorings. And for their latest menu, they use fresh strawberries and sugar to create their Strawberry Jam. While all of this requires additional preparation time and effort, Sri believes the resulting rich and bold flavor sets their cookies apart from other products on the market.
Nostalgic Inspiration
Woody Wood Baker’s cookies contain a certain sense of nostalgia and rightly so. Their cookies were inspired from Sri’s own childhood memories, combined with multiple inspirations from other cultures worldwide. “I have always lived far away from my parents, and would only be able to get together with them during Chinese New Years, where all the delicious meal and cookies are always available. To me, the most exciting part of Chinese New Year is trying out all the exquisite cookies one by one!” These became the base from which Sri and her Italian partner created her cookies. She would draw inspiration from old recipes, substituting the any artificial flavorings with real ingredients and testing them out continuously until it is perfect.
“My Italian partner was a pastry chef in Italy and he also loves cookies, especially biscotti. Sometimes, his breakfast would consist only of cookies along with milk or coffee.” In fact, this was how Sri and her partner usually conjures up new flavor ideas, during breakfast as they enjoyed cookies and milk. From having just five types of cookies varieties at the start, Woody Wood Baker now has more than 20 variants within the year.
Halloween Treats and Future Plans
For Halloween, Woody Wood Baker paired butter and chocolate cookies along with several different flavored dips. The result is a Halloween Trick or Treats Box that consists a fun kids activity (the trick) and a container of butter and chocolate cookies with four dipping sauces (the treat). The four flavors of dipping sauces are Homemade Strawberry Jam (Vampire’s Blood), Nutella (Witches’ Potion), Homemade Peanut Butter (Jack-O-Lantern) and Homemade Pistachio Dips (Frankenstein’s). They are also planning to create some new flavors for Christmas, with a ton of ideas and experiments coming around the corner. “We can’t reveal anything yet, but for sure we will be featuring a pretty packaging and sets!” shared Sri.
