Korean Fried Chicken is actually a pretty recent addition into the Korean culture. It was introduced during the '50s and '60s by American expats, but didn't really take off until 1977, when a local restaurateur started frying individually portioned bits of chicken.
Korean Fried Chicken is essentially American-style fried chicken that is usually fried twice. This second frying is often done with the addition of Korean style herbs and spices, sauces and other experimental flavours. This is a down-to-earth fast food that are best consumed with ice-cold beer, which Koreans call “chimaek“, a blend of the words “maekju” (beer) and “chikin” (fried chicken).
One of the more popular Korean Fried Chicken joint in Sydney is Gami Chicken and Beer, a fast-casual fried chicken and beer franchise that was first opened in Melbourne in 2006. It’s steady growth has seen it expand and open more outlets, with two NSW branches in Chippendale and Castle Hill.
Their menu is extensive and portions are huge. Their main draw is the Boneless Fried Chicken. These RSPCA-approved fried chicken morsels are coated with Gami’s signature seasoning of herbs and spices, and comes slathered in your choice of sauce–sweet chilli, soy garlic or spicy chilli. The beer on offer is a cloudy pale lager that are made exclusively for Gami by Thunder Road Brewing in Brunswick.
There are also other side dishes that are popular in Gami Chicken and Beer, such as the Kimchi Pancake – coarsely cut kimchi, onion and shallot coated in pancake batter and fried to semi-crispness, and Potato Heaven – a Gami signature featuring layered cheesy potato goodness, topped with sweet chilli sauce, sour cream and melted mozzarella cheese.
